How to Find Your State's Victims' Rights Advocate

  • AdvocacyCon

Every state has its own victims' rights statute, and most have a free advocate system attached to it, but finding the right door can be its own small ordeal. Here's how to shortcut that.

Start with your local prosecutor's office

Nearly every district attorney's office has a victim advocate or victim witness coordinator on staff. This is usually the fastest, most direct route, and it's free. Call the main office line and ask specifically for victim services.

Your state Attorney General's office

Most state AG websites have a dedicated victims' services or crime victim compensation division, often with its own hotline. This is a good second stop if the prosecutor's office doesn't have what you need, or if your case doesn't have an active prosecution yet.

National starting points if you're stuck

●       Victim Connect Resource Center, run by the National Center for Victims of Crime, a free phone/chat/text line that refers you to services in your specific state

●       The National Center for Victims of Crime's website, which maintains broader victim resource directories

●       NOVA, the National Organization for Victim Advocacy, if you want to understand what a properly trained advocate should actually be offering you

What a victims' rights advocate should actually do for you

●       Explain your specific state's victims' rights statute in plain terms

●       Help you request case notifications and updates in writing

●       Walk you through what happens at each stage of a prosecution, if there is one

●       Connect you to compensation funds for expenses tied to the crime

If you've tried these routes and still feel stuck, that's genuinely common, and it's part of why AdvocacyCon exists. Families often find their actual answers not from a website, but from another family or advocate who's already been through it. Come find that at AdvocacyCon 2026.
