Destiny McClain was the kind of person who couldn't walk past someone in need. Her mother, Brenda Gilliam-Miller, says that if Destiny and her sisters saw someone hungry outside a store, they'd go in and buy groceries for that person too, not just themselves.
On July 18, 2021, 23-year-old Destiny was standing in line at a food truck near 17th Street and McDowell Road in Phoenix, Arizona, when shots were fired into the crowd around 3:30 a.m. She was struck and later died. Police believe the shooting was random and that Destiny was not the intended target.
Investigators have surveillance footage of a dark, four-door sedan leaving the scene, but the vehicle has never been identified and no one has been arrested.
Her mother has spent every year since pushing the case back into public view: a foundation in Destiny's name, a scholarship, interviews, a documentary. She has also gone back to school to become a victim's advocate herself.
